20293 Heliconia latispatha – Expanded Lobster Claw

Description

The Heliconia latispatha comes from Mexico and is particularly common in South America. This smaller, perennial, rhizome-forming heliconia species only grows to a height of about 1.50 m and sets upright flower stalks that are up to 45 cm long. Up to 18 beautiful individual flowers develop on it, which look like a scorpion’s tail in shape. It appears in red-yellow-orange or orange-green. The plant is similar to the banana family and the leaves are almost identical and 3-5 leaves develop per shoot. It thrives remarkably well in shady locations and can almost double its size there.
