Description
The Java Olive is one of the deciduous Sterculia shadow trees of the mallow family. The easy-care container plant forms almost horizontally growing branches and twigs. The leaves are large, lobed hand-shaped and deep green. In nature, the Java Olive grows 8-10 feet tall and grows in open grasslands. After flowering large, woody and very impressive follicles are formed, which contain many seeds. The sturdy fruit pods are sold as decorative items and musical instruments are made from the wood of the plant. In South Asia, even the seeds are roasted or fried and eaten. Their taste is comparable to that of chestnuts.
