Description
This 2 to 3 metres tall “original banana” has been grown for thousands of years. The banana shrub is perennial and with its large, over 1 metre long leaves it is easily spotted. Drooping inflorescences with reddish to violet coloured flowers can develop from the pseudostem (false stem) after 3 to 4 years. The plant dies after fruiting. The rhizome, however, pushes out new shoots underground, which develop into new plants.
