The beautiful and exotic plant from the banana family is probably the most eye-catching species of heliconia. It has a large, pendulous cascade of scarlet bracts within which sits a yellow-green ‘beaked’ flower. Unlike most Heliconia species, the flowers here are pendulous. In English, it is also called “Hanging-Lobster-Claws” because of its flowers. There are about 100 evergreen species whose leaves resemble those of bananas or Strelitzia and reach a height of between 1 and 3 meters.
