Description
This monstrous tree from southwestern India and Sri Lanka demands a prominent position in the tropical garden; one of its huge leaves can shelter more than ten people from the rain! It is slow growing and long lived, but dies after fruiting at around 50+ years of age. At that time, it produces a huge, umbrella-shaped inflorescence (surely one of the wonders of the plant world), and thousands of rarely produced, golf ball-sized fruit that rain down for several weeks when ripe.
