Description

The subTropical Andean gooseberry grows to 1-2 metres tall, can be grown as an annual or perennial plant and produces soft, slightly hairy leaves. The white to yellow flowers develop in the leaf axils. Each plant is able to produce up to 300 light brown-yellow berries developing in a lantern-like casing. The quite expensive berries are fully mature after 3-4 months. Eaten raw they are very delicious, but may also be used for marmelade, chutney or made into drinks. The plants thrive wherever tomatoes would thrive as well. Caution: The Peruvian cherry belongs to the nightshade family, unripe fruits are poisonous!
