Description
The conspicuous palm lily belongs to the dragon tree plants and is a little-branched, green shrub. The flowers are mostly of violet or bluish colour attached to drooping panicles, about 60 cm in length, which themselves develop 20 cm long side shoots. In Asia, the plant is grown around houses, because it is said to fend of evil spirits. It rarely flowers, which is why a flowering plant is considered to be a good omen. Fans and mats are made from the leaves. The Cordyline is great for tub plant cultivation within our regions. The Spaniards call this plant “the sugar cane of the Indians”, for its roots contain 5 to 25% sugar.
