Description

It is native to temperate regions across Eurasia and North Africa. Hypericum perforatum, commonly known as St John’s wort, is a flowering plant in the family Hypericaceae. It is a perennial plant that grows up to 1 metre tall, with many yellow flowers. St. John’s wort is traditionally burned in smoke on St. John’s Day, i.e. the summer solstice, because it is considered a symbol of the sun. Young women wear wreaths made from the plant when dancing around the St. John’s bonfire. One folk use included the oily extract known as St John’s oil, a red, oily liquid extracted from H. perforatum that may have been a treatment for wounds.

Sowing Advice

The seeds germinate well at 15°-22°C. First seedlings appear after about 2-4 weeks. Good herb soil or also cultivation soil is suitable as sowing ground. Outdoor sowing is possible from April to June.
